In my room: Martine Aamodt Hess
“In my room” is a column dedicated to explore and celebrate individual style. We’re looking inside the wardrobe, but instead of discovering Narnia, we are searching for pieces that tell stories of identity and memories. Now it’s time for our second co-founder to take us through her closet, while being interviewed and photographed by Nora.

What does a typical day look like for you?
I just finished my last semester of highschool and I’m currently on summer break, before uni starts in September. At the moment, my typical day looks somewhat like this; I wake up, make my bed, and water my plants if it’s needed. I find myself most inspired in the morning or at night, so if I have the time (mostly on the weekends) I like to get working on some articles for Nuet or a submission for a local newspaper. I just started a new job, doing media and advertising, so I’ll take the bus to get to work 5 days of the week. In the afternoon, I’ll cook dinner and spend my “spare time” either studying to get my driver’s license or hanging out with friends.
Describe your personal style.
I can never decide whether I want my style to be simple and classic, or dominated by lots of colors and patterns, but who says that you can only stick to one of them? One of my favorite things to do is to mix and match different eras and styles. I predominantly wear vintage, but I might mix a pair of jeans from the 70s with a sweater from the 50s, a silk scarf from the 60s and a pair of chunky docs from the 90s. I love to experiment, whether it’s with textures like silk, tweed and wool, or by turning a peach baby doll into a top. With that being said, I do enjoy and appreciate the simplicity and elegance of a simple turtle neck and a good pair of jeans - and that whole “parisienne look”.
Who is your style icon?
Call me a francophone if you want, but I love Jane Birkin’s effortless style and Brigitte Bardot’s more “feminine” looks. For more contemporary style inspiration, I like to follow @fridacashflow and @alizéegamberini on instagram.
What is important to you when you shop?
Sustainability always comes first, meaning that I always shop either second-hand or pick brands that are both marked as eco-friendly and ethical. For the same reason, I try to implement more minimalism in my lifestyle. But since fashion is a direct source of joy to me, and is an important part of my identity, I usually end up with a compromise: I’m always searching for clothing that I know will make me feel more confident and happy, so that I know I’ll wear the piece for years to come. If not, I figure that it’s not worth my money or consumption.
What is your current favorite piece in your closet?
The first thing that comes to mind is my slip dress from the 1940’s. When I discovered it three years ago, I immediately fell in love with it’s powder pink color, lace details and cut. I had never seen anything like it before. To this day, it’s still remains one of my most beloved pieces of clothing.
Any items you wish were in you shopping cart at the moment?
A paloma wool sweater and a new shade of red lipstick.
How did you get into collecting vintage?
I believe it was a combination of wanting to find a way to shop more eco-friendly (that fit my budget) and the fact that I’ve always been a fan of vintage fashion. Over the years, I’ve learned that shopping sustainably is oh so easy, when you prefer vintage anyways. I find that the quality is often better, the clothing is more unique in terms of style, and as a way of shopping it’s certainly more fun.
Do you plan your outfits the day before or on the same day/ more intuitively?
Most of the time I pick out my outfits the day before. As I’ve stated earlier, I truly appreciate the art of a good outfit, and spending some time picking it out is purely a pleasure to me (except those days we all have, where just nothing seems to be the right pick). Therefore I don’t like to do it in a rush in the morning.
What are three pieces from your closet you can’t live without?
My vintage flared jeans from the 70’s, my wool turtleneck (goes with everything) and surprisingly another black item - a vintage glitter top with spaghetti straps - it’s so versatile and will spice up every outfit. Oh, and my brass hoop earrings, I wear them almost every day.
One trend you wish would come back?
Gogo boots!
One trend you hope never sees the light of day again?
Low-rise jeans. Really, I wish that most of what is considered 00’s fashion, should remain exactly 00’s fashion. The world doesn’t need more capris, long tunics over jeans nor uggs.
