Writing challenge: Summer edition

It is fair to say that 2020 has brought us a summer different from the others. Whether this has led you to an art block or a new creative boom, now is the time to get out your journal and write and reflect with our 20 days of writing prompts!

Day #1

Describe your ideal summer day: When do you wake up? How are you feeling? What is the view from your bedroom window? The first thing on the agenda?

Day #2

What does the sky look like today? Pay attention to the changes throughout the day and use a couple of sentences to describe sunrise, midday, sunset and the night sky.

Day #3

Write about the characteristics of this summer: The songs on repeat, your favourite outfit, colours that dominate, what is in the headlines and what is on your mind.

Day #4

How are you feeling today? Do you miss the person you were one year ago? What makes today different from this day one year ago?

Day #5

Where would you like to see yourself in one year’s time, both mentally and physically?

Day #6

Describe your favourite thing about the current season. It does not need to be longer than a short paragraph, but you should focus on being specific and including as much detail as possible.

Day #7

Write a paragraph about what summer smells like. Is hibiscus flowers and ripe mangos? Sweet sunblock and salty oceans? New books and fresh bedsheets? Strong coffee and a hot city?

Day #8

Describe your favourite memory from a past summer. What do you think made this memory stand out in particular?

Day #9

Note down some seemingly insignificant details from today that you belive would otherwise be forgotten.

Day #10

Is there anything you miss before the pandemic started that you will never take for granted again? 

Day #11

Has 2020 changed you in any way? Or has it taught you something new about yourself? Reflect both the negative and positive.

Day #12

Have a four minute brain dump. Do not question, just write.

Day #13

Write a letter to someone you are annoyed at, someone you love or someone you have never met. Share it or keep it.

Day #14

If you have the privelege to do so, write outside today. In your garden, on the beach, by the river or on your porch if it is raining. Make yourself a cup of tea and write to your future self. What do you think he/she/they need to hear?

Day #15

Write about a memory from before the pandemic. Why did you choose that memory? How did feel, who were you with and what can make you feel like that again?

Day #16

Reflect on three things you regret not doing, why you should have gone through with it and why you did not.

Day #17

Write a page about your best friend.

Day #18

Bullet point a list of all the reasons you like your hometown. Even if you are not fond of the place, there are always aspects of it that is lovable. A café, a person, a walking path or perhaps a tradition?

Day #19

What are your favourite things right this moment? An album, a book, time of day or a pair of pants? Make a collage drawings, writing and photographs. Get creative and focus on all the things you love.

Day #20

Sum up your summer so far using only three words, then use three more words to describe what you hope the rest of the summer has in store for you.
