In my room: Zsófi Mayer

“IN MY ROOM” IS A COLUMN DEDICATED TO EXPLORE AND CELEBRATE INDIVIDUAL STYLE. WE’RE LOOKING INSIDE THE WARDROBE, BUT INSTEAD OF DISCOVERING NARNIA, WE ARE SEARCHING FOR PIECES THAT TELL STORIES OF IDENTITY AND MEMORIES. This time, Zsófi Mayer, is inviting you into her London flat. You might know her as the Budapest-native, that recently moved to LOndon to study and pursue her interest in graphic design and arts - and the person behind our most recent illustration work here on nuet. Now, she will be showing off her collection of jewelry and bold bags, as well as answer questions about her style journey.

What does a typical day in your life look like?

Not a day goes by without me listening to music, talking to my friends and thinking about my dog. Other than that, I spend my time in uni or at my part-time job at a local coffee shop.

Describe your personal style and how it came to be.

I think I follow the current trends with a vintage twist. It is a little difficult to determine how I shaped my style, but my early teenage years were definitely indecisive. In high school I wanted to look unique, thus I often wore my mother’s and grandmother’s old clothes. In other words, pieces that I found in the basement. I fell in love with vintage clothing and I became a weekly guest in the local thrift shops.

What is your daily uniform?

Lately, it has been my long beige coat, paired with loose trousers and a nice knitted jumper, and of course a pair of black boots.

Do you plan your outfits the day before or depending on the mood of the day?

I plan in advance for special occasions, but normally it depends on my mood. I like to imagine a character when picking out the pieces, even if I only wear jeans and a white tee that day.

What clothing items are you most comfortable in vs. what pieces makes you feel powerful?

Dresses, long coats, boots, and hats make me feel confident, as well as comfortable. I am lucky to live in London where this is a very typical combination.

Any style icons?

My grandma and Stella von Senger.

What is important to you when you shop?

Seeing that I am on a student budget, I sadly cannot afford high-end, eco-friendly brands, therefore I sometimes opt for fast fashion. Do not get me wrong, I prefer second-hand pieces because they are affordable, sustainable and have a story. Not only that, but the quality is way better than fast fashion items.

Favourite place to purchase vintage in London and Budapest?

I have not really had the chance to explore the London thrift scene, but I do love the vintage kilo sale events. In Budapest it is the Vintage Humana. That amazing shop is literally the source for half of me and my friends’ wardrobe!

Name three pieces from your closet which you cannot live without.

My vintage earrings, black Martens boots and turtlenecks (they are very, very useful).

Favourite piece in your closet at the moment?

My checked wool scarf that I got from a friend from Scotland.

Latest purchase?

My latest purchase is a pretty personal one. It was a pair of golden hoop earrings with plasticine details, made by my dear friend @rozagyurta. Her designs are amazing.

Name one artist and one fashion brand you would like to see collab on a clothing line?

An Alancrocetti and Weekday collab please! I love Alancrocetti because they are very boundary-pushing. Weekday is my favorite sustainable + affordable fashion brand, and I think the two of them would come up with something great together.

One trend you hope never sees the light of day again and one trend you would like to see make a comeback?

I hope Ugg boots and low rise jeans will burn in hell, while I cannot wait for the comeback of the 2014 pastels.

What is currently in your shopping cart?

A neon eyeshadow palette and a set of stick and poke needles. I also want to add a tattoo from either Howlin Hands or Vultures Pack to my collection.

Favourite trend from the past year?

Neon. I was sceptic at first, but now I am a huge fan. It is so much fun to add neon details to my mostly neutral coloured outfits.
