Writing challenge: Isolation edition

Needless to say, the time we are in can be emotional, frustrating, unfamiliar and lonely. Maybe you are an artist feeling creatively drained, perhaps you work long and exhausting shifts as an essential worker or maybe you have lost your motivation to study now that you spend all your days at home. What is clear is that we can all use an outlet for our emotions - and this is where your pen and paper comes in. While it might not be a long-term solution or the vaccine we are all praying for, writing can be meditative and make a difference in our daily lives.

Here are 12 days worth of writing prompts to keep you busy and deal with all the feels, regardless of what that means to you.

DAY #1

Write a letter to someone you miss. Let them know what you miss about them and what you wish you were up to right now. You decide if you want to post it or keep it.

DAY #2

Write a short story based on a recent daydream. Try to fill at least one page in your journal.

Day #3

Time to rant. Tired of feeling powerless, drained and bored? Get it all out and onto paper but remember to use no more space than a single page.

DAY #4

Use 50 words to describe how you are feeling today, then strip the text down to 25 words.

DAY #5

Do you feel any different today than you did yesterday? Why do you think that is? Write it down.

DAY #6

Name three good things that happened in 2019 and three good things that happened in 2020. Hang it up somewhere you can see it like your mirror or the inside of your closet.

Write a letter to yourself where you tell yourself what you need to hear right now. Only you know what you truly need to hear. If you find this difficult, imagine you are wrting to a firend.

DAY #8

Name three people you would like to thank and why.

DAY #9

Create a list for things you miss and keep it as a gratitude list for the day this has all blown over.

DAY #10

What was the last novel you read? Write yourself into the story. You can be whoever you want to be.

DAY #11

Describe the room you are currently sitting in with negatively charged words, then re-write the story, shifting the mood by using positively charged words.

DAY #12

Make a gratitude list of all the things you’re grateful for having in your life right now despite the current circumstances. Try to be specific.
